Douglas Squirrel

The Douglas Squirrel is native to this area and can be seen or heard in Morrison Park and elsewhere in the watershed. Photo by K Clouston.

The Douglas Squirrel is native to the Pacific coast unlike the larger Eastern Grey Squirrels that have found their way here from back East.  Our squirrels are adapted to live in coniferous forests and prefer old growth or older second growth trees which are uncommon outside of parks.  The problem squirrels tend to be the eastern invaders that are more adapted to living in urban areas and are also twice as big.  The Douglas Squirrel is territorial so you generally find them when they ‘yell’ at you to get out of their space, especially if you are accompanied by other critters (dogs)!
